In The Beginning

We began as four close friends on a weekend trip to Phoenix, Arizona, in February 2019. During that trip, an idea took shape: what if we created a safe, welcoming social space where gay and bi men could connect and go camping together during the summer?

We started by creating a small Facebook group and inviting a few close friends. Naturally, those friends invited others, and we were intentional about making sure everyone felt comfortable and included—even those who weren’t out yet.

The group grew far beyond anything we expected. By June, when our first campout arrived, more than 100 men had joined the group, and just over 50 attended that first event.

Today, our community has grown to well over 1,000 men across our Facebook group and website. Several times a year, we come together to enjoy friendship, connection, and shared experiences. Along the way, we’ve expanded beyond camping to include trips to Palm Springs, hot pool events at Lava Hot Springs and Crystal Hot Springs, monthly dinners, and a variety of other social activities. We’re always excited to explore new ideas and create more opportunities to connect.

"The creation, ongoing development, expansion, and nurturing of a 

gay-oriented men's group. 

The purpose of this group is to provide a welcoming, inclusive, positive, and safe community for gay men of all ethnicities, ages, environments, educational backgrounds, and socio-economic backgrounds."

Background:

The function of our group is best described by defining community (in conjunction with the Mission Statement):

"a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals."

The gay community has traditionally been disjointed. This is primarily due to outside negative attitudes, which are particularly strong in the US. This influence manifests itself in the form of non-cohesive gay relationships. They are generally superficial and only last a short time. This leads to isolation, depression, and a diminished quality of life   (both physically and mentally). These symptoms grow particularly more acute as gay men grow older.

Regardless of their origins, these attitudes have a devastating effect on the gay community.

CUB Camping:

Our goal is to break this ongoing, negatively reinforcing cycle of detachment. We host multiple events

throughout the year, but the primary events we host are two camping outings during the summer. To be as

Inclusive as possible, they are very affordable (break-even for our charity). However, with any excess funds, we also sponsor those men of all ages who could not otherwise afford to attend. Many families abandon gay men, and

these men usually do not have families of their own. 

Isolation is the norm. 

The CUB Adventures organization

provides a community, through its events and activities, where men who have been marginalized can find a safe place to associate without fear of judgment or exclusion. And everyone has fun! Each camp-out is four days of freedom from the routine and the outside world.

The better question is: why not join CUB Adventures? We’re a fantastic group of guys who genuinely enjoy spending time together. What started as a small camping trip has grown into something much bigger, but our mission has remained the same. We strive to create a welcoming social environment where men of all shapes and sizes feel comfortable coming together, sharing experiences, building connections, and—ideally—forming lifelong friendships.

We’re also proud of our Brandon Orr Memorial Scholarship program, which raises funds to support members in need. Whether it’s helping someone attend an event or assisting with other financial challenges, our community consistently steps up. Our members are incredibly generous and always willing to support one another.
